The revised advisory circular sets out the registration marking requirements under Civil Aviation Safety Regulation Part 45, as well as an exemption that took effect as of February 2010. The exemption allows aircraft with a maximum takeoff weight below 5700kgs to be exempt from some requirements that cover the location and size of registration markings and the carriage of an aircraft registration identification plate.

Aircraft covered by the exemption do not have to display markings on the under side of the wings and can have lateral markings with a minimum height of 150mm instead of the previous required height of 300mm. Exempt aircraft do not have to carry a registration identification plate, as long as the aircraft carries a manufacturer’s fireproof data plate.

CASA says the exemption has been put in place because the design of some new generation aircraft makes compliance with the regulations impossible. The surfaces of composite materials also limit compliance. Amendments will be made to Part 45 of the regulations to include the conditions of the exemption, which will cease having effect in January 2012.
