This Seagull III amphibian and its three-man crew are being lowered onto the water from HMAS Albatross, circa 1930. The wooden-hulled Seagull III was under-powered and could only operate on relatively calm waters, limiting their use at sea. But the RAAF used them extensively in coastal survey work. They were replaced by the more powerful metal-hulled Seagull V in 1935. [RAN]

An RAAF Spitfire pilot who disappeared in France during WWII has been formally identified as Sergeant William James Smith.
