Inbound to Oshkosh, a pilot flying a 1948 Cessna 120 unexpectedly flew into instrument meteorological conditions, in an aircraft not equipped for instrument flight and with only basic instruments to fall back on. After declaring an emergency, he told air traffic control he was struggling to keep the aircraft upright.
What followed was a masterclass in radar assistance: controllers talked him through every turn, coached him toward improving weather to the east, and kept him stable and on track for Wittman Regional Airport. As the aircraft finally broke out of cloud, the pilot spotted the runway lights, and landed safely on Runway 36 at Oshkosh, with the entire runway held clear in case the approach went wrong.
A calm pilot and a precise controller turned a genuinely dangerous situation into a safe landing.
