The nascent Lockyer Valley Regional Airport will officially be announced by Queensland Attorney-General Paul Lucas on Tuesday December 20 at the Lockyer Valley Cultural Centre.
As first reported in the September/October 2011 print issue of Australian Flying, the Lockyer Valley Regional Airport (YLKR), which will be privately developed by Lockyer Valley Regional Airport Pty Ltd and feature an all-weather 1250m sealed runway, will be constructed to meet growing aviation demands in south-east Queensland.
Construction on the Lockyer Valley Regional Airport will begin in early 2012, with the first aircraft scheduled to land later that year. The airport, which will be situated in the western growth corridor, will not only meet private and charter demands, but will also become a base for emergency services.
Lockyer Valley Regional Council Mayor Steve Jones said Council supported the development, which is a welcome addition to the community and marks a reversal in the trend to close regional airports.
“This represents an important milestone for our region, and will put the Lockyer Valley on the national map as home to Australia’s first ‘green’ airport, utilising solar power, water harvesting and best building practices,” Jones said.
The onsite infrastructure plan for the airport is to offer freehold hangar lots for commercial owners and operators, with a specific aim to keep the costs of aviation as low as possible. A total of 103 “freehold” hangar and other commercial lots will be created and managed by a body corporate. And importantly, the Lockyer Valley Regional Airport is at no risk of being ‘built out’ due to its location, which is away from built-up residential areas.
