Garmin has announced AXIS, a new family of flight displays that integrates IFR GPS, NAV/COMM radio and audio panel capability into a single unit.
The AXIS family is available in three display sizes: an 11.6-inch landscape display and two 8-inch options in landscape and portrait orientations. The system is compatible with certified piston-powered single and twin-engine aircraft via an STC covering hundreds of models, as well as experimental and LSA aircraft under the FAA's MOSAIC regulations.
The 11.6-inch display is available in three certified variants. The base model offers a combined PFD and MFD, while the GPS/COMM and GPS/NAV/COMM models add an integrated IFR GPS, VHF COMM radio with 10 watts of transmit power and 8.33kHz frequency tuning, and a four-place intercom audio panel with Bluetooth capability. Garmin says combining these functions into a single display reduces weight, simplifies installation and lowers cost.
"AXIS delivers a modern, highly capable cockpit experience while significantly reducing time, complexity and cost of installation through integration of navigation, communication and audio functions into a single flight display," said Carl Wolf, Garmin Vice President Aviation Sales, Marketing, Programs and Support.
Safety features include Smart Glide, which assists pilots during engine failures by navigating to the nearest airport in range and, if equipped with a compatible autopilot, can auto-engage to fly the aircraft. Runway Occupancy Awareness uses ADS-B traffic to alert pilots to potential runway incursions, while SurfaceWatch provides visual and aural alerts to help prevent takeoffs or landings on taxiways.
The AXIS also supports Enhanced Synthetic Vision Technology, 3D SafeTaxi airport displays, and an advanced engine indication system compatible with most four to six-cylinder normally aspirated and turbocharged engines.
For experimental builders, AXIS is designed as a streamlined upgrade path from the popular G3X Touch, using existing sensors and the same panel cutouts and mounting points.
The 11.6-inch displays have achieved FAA and EASA TSO certification and will be available this month. The 8-inch displays are expected in early 2027.
Garmin Australia's Mikko Kulomaa said Australian pilots would not have long to wait. "As CASA recognises FAA and EASA STCs, which are expected imminently, the new AXIS flight displays can then also be installed in CASA registered aircraft," he said.
