English-speaking Burmese newspaper The Irrawaddy is reporting that excavation of Spitfires buried in Burma after WWII will commence on January 12, 2013.

The man who located the buried fighters, Briton David Cundall, says the job is expected to take between four to six weeks, using diggers for the initial earth removal, then local labour once the crates are reached.

He expects to find aircraft at three sites: Mingaladon, Meiktila and Myitkyina, including a Mk VIII to match the one flying at Temora.

Geophysicists from Leeds University and Imperial University, London, will be on hand to conduct further surveys in the week before the dig begins.
