Aircraft operating in procedural towers around Australia maybe subject to GNSS (GPS) separation standards from 2 October 2014.

The new procedures may apply to aircraft navigating with GPS in the airspace of towered airports that don't have radar, such as Mackay, Rockhampton, Albury and Launceston.

Airservices Australia expects the separation minima to be similar to those applied to VOR and NDB approaches.

In AIC H28/14, Airservices Australia explains the benefits of the change.

"This has the potential to significantly improve the efficiency with which aircraft are processed outside surveillance coverage.

"Air Traffic Controllers will be able to apply separation standards using a mix of ground-based and space-based navigation aids, as well as applying more efficient standards to those navigation solely by GNSS"

AIC H28/14 explains the new procedures including radio phrases and can be downloaded from the Airservices website.
