This years National Funflight Day is less than a month away, but there is still time for pilots to get involved.

Funflight is a national organisation that aims to provide the thrill of flight to children touched by adversity by encouraging flying schools, aero clubs and private owners to donate their time and aircraft for joy flights.

The event this year is on Sunday 10 November.

Last year, 14 aero clubs flew a total of 1400 children. The special passengers are most often children with threatening medical conditions and their carers, although other groups may also qualify. In 2009, children who lost homes and/or loved ones in Black Saturday took part.

Locations such as Newcastle, Townsville, Alice Springs, Moorabbin and Lilydale have been regular supporters of the event, as have insurance companies QBE and Allianz, and fuel companies Shell and Air BP.

"Private pilots don't have many ways of using our licences for the good of the community," said one PPL after last year's Funflight day.

"Angel Flight is one, and this is another. Honestly, I've been flying for 30 years and watching a smiling child step out of my Bonanza is one of the most satisfying experiences I've ever had. It's great to be able to do this and bring so much joy to a child that is doing it tough."

Pilots and aero clubs wanting to get in on the fun can contact Funflight through www.funflight.org.
