An F-22 Raptor will conduct a flying demonstration at the Australian International Airshow this year.

Raptors came to Avalon for the 2011 show, but were static displays only surrounded by tight security.

Air show boss Ian Honnery is understandably delighted to get one of the US Air Force's front-line stealth fighters in the air in front of Australian crowds.

"This is a really special aircraft and it was so exciting to get it to Avalon in 2011," he said when announcing the news. "This time however the USAF is able to show off the aircraft's amazing capability with flying demonstrations."

The F-22 Raptor boasts stealth technology, speed, agility and long range capabilities and is regarded as the USAF's premier air-to-air fighter, and will be showcased at Avalon by Major Henry 'Schadow' Schantz, Chief of the USAF F-22 Raptor Aerial Demonstration Team.

F-22s are powered by two 23,500 lb thrust P&W F119-PW-100 turbofans, which give them an estimated cruise at altitude of Mach 2.25.

In addition to the F-22 Raptors, the USAF will bring an F-16 demonstration team and a C-17 demonstration team.
