A NSW coroner has recommended mandatory radios for gliders after a fatal mid-air collision near Goulburn last year.

Coroner Mary Jerram made the recommendation yesterday in her findings into the death of 50-year-old Andrew Ahearn in April 2013.

Ahearn died after the glider he was in collided with another on approach to Carrick airstrip north of Goulburn. His co-pilot Lindsay Gamble was injured in the crash.

The other aircraft was flown by Canberra man Peter Jolly.

The inquiry examined the procedures and communications at Southern Tablelands Gliding Club, but concluded that although there may have been some complacency, no person could be blamed for the crash.

Allegedly, there were some problems communicating with the ground, which lead to Jerram recommending that CASA make radio carriage compulsory for all gliders.

At the moment, many gliders do carry radios, but it's on a purely voluntary basis.
