Wyong Shire Council looks set to proceed with a proposal for a regional airport on the Central Coast of NSW.
If it goes ahead, the plan would see a Type 3 regional airport with a single 2300-metre runway built to the west of the M1 motorway and north of Sparkes Road,
The proposal is for aircraft up to A320/B737 size to use the airport, similar to Ballina/Byron and Gold Coast.
Wyong Shire Mayor Doug Eaton said it is expected to inject $250 million annually into the regional economy once it is fully operational.
“The Central Coast, with higher than average unemployment, is really missing out by not having its own regional airport,” he said.
“Other similar regions close to major cities, such as the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, have airports that inject hundreds of millions of dollars into the local economy and create thousands of local jobs.”
The next step is for the Council to initiate environmental, geotechnical, noise and economic studies and prepare a masterplan and planning proposal for the airport, which will, of course, be subject to public scrutiny.
