Sunshine Coast Airports has agreed to close Caloundra Airport on the afternoon of May 26, 2012 to accomodate a car rally. Flying schools and private operators have been told they will have to make other arrangements during that time.

A statement released today said  the airport would be closed from 1430 to midnight to enable airport manager Sunshine Coast Regional Council and the International Rally of Queensland (IROQ) to hold a time trial stage around the airport. Runways 12/30 and 05/23 as well as all helipads will be taken out of service.

The Director of Regional and Remote Aviation Industry Policy Branch, Michael Rush has consented to the closure.

The statement, sent by Airport Operations Co-ordinator Rod Miller said "We would ask that all flight schools and GA pilots that have training scheduled for Caloundra Airport between the times mentioned above on the 26th May make other arrangements or reschedule due to the airports closure."

Caloundra, only 15 minutes flying from Brisbane, is home to a small number of flying schools and the Queensland Aviation Museum.
