Four members of the Australian Women Pilots Association (AWPA) will benefit from flight training scholarships awarded by Airservices Australia.

The scholarships offer $8000 in flight training at any level from ab-initio through to CPL. The winners, announced at a dinner in Victor Harbour on Saturday night, are:

  • Alexandra Shaw, Bunbury WA. Flight training at Bunbury Aero Club, Bunbury.
  • Shivangi Sharma, Cannington WA. Flight training at Royal Aero Club of WA, Jandakot.
  • Melanie Cummins, Lock SA. Flight training at Aerostar Aviation, Parafield.
  • Hunter McLeod, Rippleside VIC. Flight training at TVSA, Bacchus Marsh.

Airservices Executive General Manager Greg Hood presented the scholarships, congratulating the winners and encouraging them to continue to pursue a future career in aviation.

“Previous winners of these scholarships have gone on to accept flying positions in the industry after successfully achieving a commercial pilot license and one winner is now an air traffic control trainee at our Learning Academy,” he said.

“We’re proud to support the work of the AWPA as they help women learn to fly and we look forward to watching these women make their flying dreams a reality. Promoting opportunities for women in aviation is just one way in which we are committed to supporting diversity within the industry.”

Airservices has recommitted for another to years to the scholarship program, which is open to all AWPA members who are at least  15 years old and demonstrate an aptitude for flying.
