Four women pilots have won Airservices-sponsored Australian Women Pilots’ Association (AWPA) flight training scholarships valued at $8000.

The winners were announced at the AWPA National Conference Presentation Dinner in Launceston, Tasmania on 25 April.

The scholarships will help the women with the costs of training at any level, from the early stages through to a Commercial Pilots License.

The winners are:

  • Brooke Walsh, Somerville, VIC. Flight training at Peninsula Aero Club, Tyabb.
  • Vanessa Whan, Rutherford, NSW. Flight training at Royal Newcastle Aero Club.
  • Lucy Simkin, Mooroopna, VIC. Flight training at Secure Air Flight Training, Shepparton.
  • Amelia Morton, Bourkelands, NSW. Flight training at Wagga Air Centre, Wagga Wagga.

Airservices Executive General Manager, Corporate and Industry Affairs, Mairi Barton congratulated the winners and encouraged them to continue to pursue a future career in aviation.

“Previous winners of these scholarships have gone on to accept flying positions in the industry after successfully achieving a commercial pilot license,” she said.

“We’re proud to support the work of the AWPA as they help women learn to fly and we look forward to watching these women make their flying dreams a reality.

The scholarship recipients were chosen from a field of applicants who had demonstrated an aptitude for flying, were a member of AWPA and were at least 15 years of age.
