Airservices Australia has announced the three recipients of the 2010 AOPA-Airservices Flying Training Scholarships.
The joint scholarships, courtesy of an agreement between the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (Australia) and Airservices Australia, will go to:
- Luke Hoy, 21 from Indooroopilly, Queensland;
- Finian Stronach, 19 (Aero Club of Tasmania) from Mt Stuart, Tasmania; and
- Ryan Campbell, 16 (Meriumbula Air Services) from Broadwater, NSW.
The scholarships are designed to help young student pilots reach a minimum general proficiency flying test (GFPT) level of flying and, in most instances, progress to achieving their Commercial Pilot's Licence.
Winners are chosen by AOPA Board members from entries comprising a flight training plan and an essay. Presentation, character and an individual's likelihood to succeed in aviation are some of the major considerations for the Board when they select scholarship winners.
The three soon-to-be pilots will each receive $6000 to subsidise the cost of obtaining a Private or Commercial Pilot's Licence.
Airservices spokesman Rob Walker said the scholarships showcased the industry and supported the sustainability of the General Aviation community.
“We recognise that for over half a Century AOPA has represented pilots and aircraft owners in Australia,” Walker said. “By supporting AOPA, Airservices encourages entry paths into aviation and young Australians to explore careers in this dynamic industry.”
“I congratulate all the winners and encourage them to get started with their training and working towards achieving their licences.”
