Six Australians have been recognised in the 2016 Queens Birthday honours list for services to aviation.
They include Safeskies Australia President Emeritus George Alfred "Peter" Lloyd, who was awarded a Companion of the Order of Australia (AC), the highest ranking civilian award in the country.
The AC is for Lloyd’s eminent services to the aviation industry in a broader sense but more specifically for his on-going contribution to aviation safety. He is also Honorary Governor of the Australian Sport Aviation Confederation and President d’Honneur of the Federation Aeronautique Internationale.
Lloyd already had an AO, OBE, Oswald Watt Gold Medal and Yuri Gagarin Medal, and was decorated in WWII with a Mentioned In Dispatches.
Other honours for services to aviation or in aviation-related matters included:
Member of the Order of Australian (AM)
Mr Richard Rawnsley Cavill, Walkerville, SA.
For significant service to business and commerce in South Australia, as a supporter of industry development and training, and to the aviation sector.
Dr Robert James Hall, Bathurst, NSW.
For significant service to sport aviation, particularly to gliding, through leadership, advocacy and training roles, and to the promotion of safety standards. Hall has served as the CFI of Bathurst Soaring Club.
Mr Loris Molent, Brunswick, VIC.
For significant service to aeronautical engineering, particularly to the structural integrity and airworthiness of Australian Defence Force aircraft. Molent investigated airframe lifting issues with the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, supported the F/A-18 service life monitoring program, provided recommendations to the RAAF regarding aircraft structural integrity and developed F/A-18 aft fuselage management strategies.
Order of Australia Medal (OAM)
Mrs Adrianne Claire Fleming, Ashwood, VIC.
For service to the aviation industry. Fleming is a long-standing member of the Australian Women Pilots Association and has served on the Victorian Regional Airspace and Procedures Advisory Committee (RAPAC).
Mr Alan George Killmier, Kensington, SA.
For service to aviation, particularly to gliding, and to the community. Killimer co-founded the Gliding and Soaring Club of SA in 1943, months before he enlisted with the RAAF. In 1969, he became the joint holder of the Australian gliding distance record when he flew 632km from Gawler to Strathmerton, in Victoria.
