Airservices Australia will put in place three Temporary Restricted Areas (TRA) on the Gold Coast during the 2018 Commonwealth Games in April.
TRA R970A will centre on the Carrara Sports Stadium, whilst R970B and R970C will cover the Gold Coast. Air Defence Identification Zones (ADIZ) Alpha and Bravo will complement the TRAs.
ADIZ Alpha will cover a radius of 30 nm from Gold Coast Airport SFC–A085 and ADIZ Bravo a radius of 90 nm from YBCG A085–FL600.
The new series of procedures are designed to restrict flying in and around the sports venues between 2-18 April this year.
"All aircraft and airspace users planning to fly within 90 nautical miles of the Gold Coast airport must comply with the regulations and the procedures detailed in an Aeronautical Information Service Supplement and relevant NOTAMs," CASA CEO Shane Carmody said in his February CASA Briefing newsletter.
"Temporary restricted areas and air defence identification zones will be created. Any aircraft unable to comply with the requirements will not be allowed to operate within the temporary restricted areas. Any aircraft that does not comply with the air defence identification zone requirements may be subject to intercept by military aircraft and the crew subject to criminal prosecution."
SUP H183/17 has been issued noting that flights by the Australian Defence Force and the Queensland Police Air Wing will increase during the games. There is also expected to be increased use of civil drones as well as model aircraft and rockets.
"Airspace procedures have been designed to be as permissive to civil aircraft operations as the security situation allows," the AIP SUP states. "Access to TRAs is managed by the controlling authority during the NOTAM’d activation periods."
More information including the TRA and ADIZ dimensions are in SUP H183/17 on the Airservices Australia website.
