The Austrian city of Wiener Neustadt has been added to the 2018 Red Bull Air Race calendar as the sixth round of the season.

The city, south of Vienna, will host the race on 15-16 September.

"We are delighted to be adding Austria to the calendar of the 2018 Red Bull Air Race World Championship," said Erich Wolf, General Manager of Red Bull Air Race GmbH.

"After the absence of a race in Austria in 2017, it's great news that the raceplanes will touch down at the new location of Lower Austria and the city of Wiener Neustadt."

Austria is considered the spiritual home of Red Bull Air Race as the country is the base for Red Bull itself, and the first ever race was held at Zeltweg in 2003. Races have been held in the recent past over the Red Bull-owned Spielberg motor racing circuit.

Wiener Neustadt is a city of 43,000 people, and is not far from the Hungarian border. The airport there is the home of Diamond Aircraft.

Although the season has eight rounds, only seven are now locked in. An eighth round is planned for November at a location yet to be announced, but most likely the USA or Asia.

The next race is in Chiba, Japan, 26-27 May.
