Garmin yesterday announced the new Garmin GNC 355 navigator and comms unit for the smaller end of the general aviation market.

Equipped with localiser performance with vertical guidance (LPV) capability, the GNC 355 is aimed at amateur-built experimental aircraft and aircraft with maximum take-off weights below 2700 kg.

“Based on the popularity of legacy products like the GX 60 and the GNC 250/300XL, as well as customer excitement for our new GPS 175 and GNX 375, we’re pleased to bring the GNC 355 to market,” said Carl Wolf, Garmin vice president of aviation sales and marketing.

“The GNC 355 gives value-minded customers a simple upgrade path to a GPS navigator with a number of capabilities including WAAS/LPV approach guidance, wireless connectivity, a modern comm radio, and with its standard mark-width form factor, pilots can easily add the GNC 355 without overhauling the panel of their aircraft.”

Features of the new unit include:

  • GPS navigator with LPV approach guidance, complete with a built-in Comm radio
  • easy incorporation into an existing avionics stack because of its standard 158 mm wide by 50 mm tall design
  • a user interface optimised for the screen size
  • fully WAAS/SBAS IFR-approach capable
  • two versions, the GNC 355 and GNC 355A, are available with 25 kHz and 8.33 kHz frequency channel spacing respectively
  • can be paired with a variety of avionics, including G3X Touch, G5, GFC 500 and 600 autopilots, third-party autopilots  and legacy CDI/EHSI indicators like the KI 208/209

Garmin expects the GNC 335 and 335A to be available next month for installation in up to 700 aircraft types. The recommended retail prices have been set at $US6995 and $US7695 respectively.
