Australian Robinson dealer Heliflite recently delivered the world’s first production R44 Cadet to Mareeba training school GBR Helicopters.

The new two-seat Cadet will join GBR Helicopters' training fleet of two R22s and two R44s. With a total fleet of 22 aircraft, GBR Helicopters operates tour, charter and scenic flights with bases in Cairns CBD, Cairns Airport, Mareeba Airport, Port Douglas and Horn Island.

According to GBR, the Cadet operates at a cost base much closer to the R22, putting R44 training within reach for those wanting to learn in an R44, or for those training for their PPL(H) and CPL(H) where the R44 is a more appropriate platform for their career paths.

“The larger R44 helicopter type is unquestionably an easier helicopter in which to learn to fly when compared to the R22," said GBR Helicopters’ co-owner Chris Cooper.

"Students who learn to fly in an R44 will generally develop their skills faster which in turn will progress them through the practical elements of their training faster, helping them to become a better pilot.

“For aspiring commercial pilots, it also builds valuable time in a helicopter type that most will then go on to fly in their first job. Up until recently the comparatively steep price difference between the R22 and the R44 has put off many students who elect to train in the less expensive R22. This has all changed with the R44 Cadet."

The R44 Cadet's engine and airframe are the same as the R44 Raven I four-seater, but has no rear seats. The power of the Lycoming O-540 has been de-rated to 210 hp take-off and 185 hp continuous power. The maximum take-off weight has also been reduced to 997 kg, 90 kg less than the Raven I.
