AOPA and RedBull Flugtag

The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association of Australia has announced today its application to enter the Sydney RedBull Flugtag 2018, with the goal of setting a new world distance record.

Red Bull Flugtag challenges the brave and brainy to design, build and pilot homemade flying machines off a 6-metre-high flight deck in the hope of soaring into the wild blue yonder, or more often, plunging into the waters below. Flugtag, which means ‘flying day’ in German, pushes the envelope of human-powered flight.

Teams are judged on three criteria: flight distance, the creativity of the craft, and showmanship. These criteria have inspired flying tacos, prehistoric pterodactyls, and even a giant hamburger to grace the Red Bull Flugtag flight decks! Since the first Red Bull Flugtag took place in Vienna, Austria, in 1992, more than 150 Red Bull Flugtags have been held around the globe, attracting up to 300,000 spectators for a single event.

This year, Red Bull Flugtag returns to Sydney on Saturday, November 10th at Mrs. Macquarie’s Chair. More than 500 teams will apply for a coveted spot with only 40 of the highest quality teams to be selected.

The AOPA Australia is now calling for volunteer team members to help them design, build and fly a world record-setting Red Bull Flugtag 2018 entry.
