Tasmanian aeromedical operator StarFlight has ordered three new Airbus H145 twin turbines to bolster their mission capability.

The order comes hot on the heels of a decision from the Tasmanian Government to award StarFlight a 12-year $354 million contract to provide aeromedical services.

StarFlight Chair Dennis Richardson said the H145s represented an important step forward for aeromedical services in Tasmania.

“The investment in the H145 demonstrates our commitment to strengthening aeromedical and emergency service capability in Tasmania for the long term,” he said.

“By partnering with Airbus and drawing on its proven support network in Australia, we are positioning StarFlight to deliver sustained reliability, innovation, and value to the Tasmanian Government and the communities we serve.”

Powered by two Safran Arriel 2 turbines, the H145 has a hover in ground effect ceiling of 12,500 feet and out of ground effect of 9000 feet. It has useful load of 1900 kg and a sea-level endurance of 225 minutes.

In standard HEMS configuration, the H145 has space for two pilots, two stretchers and three crew. The cabin access is via a sliding side door or rear clamshell door.

StarFlight expects the new fleet will log around 1500 flying hours per year.

“We’re proud to welcome StarFlight to the Airbus family," said Christian Venzal, Managing Director of Airbus Helicopters in Australia and New Zealand. "The H145 is built for versatility. Its ability to seamlessly switch between roles makes it an ideal asset for Tasmania’s emergency response needs.

“This aircraft order came at a time as we are expanding with a new parts distribution platform in Western Australia, enhancing our existing footprint in Queensland. We look forward to supporting StarFlight as they start this vital service.”

A joint venture company between Fox Group and LifeFlight Australia, StarFlight begins the aeromedical contract in January, and is expecting delivery of the H145s in 2027.
