The Western Australian government has committed $8.4 million in funding for a raft of improvements to the state's regional airports.

The newly announced funding for 29 airports is part of the 2011-12 round of the Regional Airports Development Scheme (RADS), with $6.4 million from the State Government’s Royalties for Regions program and a further $2 million from the Department of Transport.

“This year 29 regional airports will share $8.4 million for infrastructure upgrades and maintenance programs to provide improved access for communities, safer emergency evacuations and greater tourism opportunities,” State Transport Minister Troy Buswell said.

The full list of airports that have won a share of the funding, how much they’ve won, and what it will be used for, can be found by clicking here, but the biggest winner in regards to General Aviation is Learmonth Airport. Learmonth, a joint RAAF base/civil airport near Exmouth on the north-west coast of Western Australia, will receive $1,025,400 for the construction of dedicated helicopter and General Aviation apron areas.

Since RADS started in 1997, more than $34 million has been committed to regional aviation infrastructure in Western Australia, with a total project value of more than $86 million.
