Swinburne University has announced it will display its new Redbird FMX flight simulator at the forthcoming 2011 Swinburne Aviation Industry Seminars.

Participants at the annual seminar, to be held from Wednesday February 9 to Friday February 11 in the Engineering Building at Swinburne University of Technology’s Hawthorn Campus in Melbourne, will be able to get a sneak peek at the recently installed simulator.

The FMX is the flapship model from Texas-based Redbird Flight Simulations and features wrap-around visuals, a fully enclosed cockpit, reconfigurable construction, and an electric motion platform. Its quick-change cockpit can be configured for both single and multi-engine training with analogue or glass cockpits.

Swinburne’s is the first Redbird simulator in Australia and it will be used as a research tool for staff and students.

“The flight simulator can be used to simulate various types of aircraft including the single-engine Cessna 172, and the twin-engine Beechcraft Baron, flying in real time through all sorts of weather conditions,” Dr David Newman, Swinburne’s Aviation Head of Research, said.

“The simulator is a dedicated research tool and we will be using it to investigate such areas as pilot fatigue, decision-making and various human factors issues over the next few years.

“Participants at the seminar will be able to inspect the simulator on the opening day.”

Attendance at the seminars is free of charge, but participants must register for the sessions they wish to attend.
