The Canberra Region Aviators Association Inc is seeking responses to a survey to measure interest in a proposed new GA airfield in the ACT.

As we reported back in May, with General Aviation increasingly being pushed out of Canberra Airport the Canberra Region Aviators Association Inc (CRAA) has been lobbying the ACT Government to create a green field recreational airfield in the nation’s capital.

The move came as the ACT Government earmarked $50,000 in its latest budget for a feasibility study into the viability of building a new airport at Williamsdale, on the ACT-NSW border, to cope with growing demand.

The proposed second airfield is intended to be used for General Aviation, emergency services and recreational aviation. Under the CRAA’s plans, the Williamsdale airfield would have a 1000-metre grass runway, without lighting, with a paved engine run-up area and refuelling facilities.

Access Economics is conducting a study of the economic and financial viability of the proposed airfield on behalf of the ACT Government.

The CRAA hopes the survey will deliver sufficient numbers to show the government that indeed there is a need for a new, GA-specific airfield in the ACT. All survey responses will be kept confidential and only aggregated results will be reported to the ACT Government.

The closing date for survey submissions is Friday December 17, so any pilots who can see the clear benefits of a new ACT airfield, particularly if you see yourself using said airfield, are strongly encouraged to complete the survey.
