Newcastle Airport hosted more than 150 high school students earlier this week at its fifth annual Aviation Careers Day.
Staged on Tuesday August 10 as an initiative of Newcastle Airport’s Community Engagement Program, the Aviation Careers Day is the only aviation-targeted careers event for high school students in the Hunter region. The event offered students from years 9, 10 and 11 the opportunity to take part in presentations and workshops conducted by aviation industry specialists.
The presenters outlined the various aviation jobs that are available and the paths that can be taken to get involved in the industry. This year, the students heard from Aeropelican, BAE Systems, Defence Recruiting, International School of Aviation, Jetstar, and Newcastle Helicopters.
At the event students had the chance to get up-close to a range of aircraft, including helicopters, civil aircraft and RAAF F/A 18 Hornets, and they were also given a tour of the inside of a working maintenance hangar.
“For students interested in pursuing a career in the aviation industry, the Newcastle Airport Careers Day was a not-to-be-missed experience,” Newcastle Airport CEO Paul Hughes said. “Students gained first-hand knowledge and information from our industry partners, and of course the highlight of the day was the BAE hangar tour and having a look inside a working helicopter.”
“With growth occurring across our aviation precinct, it is tremendous that Newcastle Airport’s aviation partners are working together to promote aviation careers to ensure we have a highly skilled workforce that will lead us into the future.”
