CASA is urging Chief Flying Instructors to attend a national conference to be held in conjunction with this year's Safeskies Conference in Canberra.
CASA will be conducting the National Chief Flying Instructor Conference in conjunction with the Safeskies Conference, with both events being held at Canberra’s Hyatt Hotel from Wednesday October 26 to Thursday October 27.
As part of an agreement between Safeskies and CASA, CFIs who attend the conference will also be invited to attend Safeskies for free and listen to aviation safety presentations from the likes of Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Mark Binskin, CASA Director of Aviation Safety John McCormick, Airservices Australia CEO Greg Russell, ATSB Chief Commissioner Martin Dolan, Air Commander of Australia Air Vice-Marshal Mark Skidmore, Qantas Head of Corporate Safety John Gissing, Flight Safety Foundation’s Greg Marshall, as well as Safeskies’ own Peter Lloyd and David Forsyth.
The CFI conference will focus on two main themes: threat and error management, and generational learning styles. The event will offer CFIs the opportunity to learn more about the teaching of threat and error management and there will be a workshop to help CASA develop new safety education material on the subject.
“Flying schools have been telling CASA there is a need for additional guidance on how to integrate the teaching of threat and error management into the flying training program,” said the regulator. “Schools have also indicated they would like additional tools to more effectively assess threat and error management knowledge during flight tests.
“The sessions at the conference on generational learning styles will look particularly at how to engage more effectively with generation Y student pilots. This will include looking at a case study of a flying school that has taken initiatives to improve the way they teach their generation Y students.”
In the coming months CASA will circulate information on its National Chief Flying Instructor Conference to all flying schools in Australia.
