CASA will conduct special flight safety checks at a number of aerodromes around the country starting this weekend.

These will be low-level flights to ensure flight paths at each aerodrome continue to operate safely. The aerodromes involved are Cootamundra, Griffith, Hay, Narrandera, Nowra, Temora, West Wyalong, and Young. The checks are scheduled to be carried out between Saturday May 8 and Tuesday May 11 and will take several hours.

The flights will be flown in a twin-engine Cessna Conquest by Radiola Aerospace, with the aircraft conducting the safety checks within an area up to 35 kilometres from each aerodrome.

The two co-pilots will fly the Conquest as low as several hundred feet at times to ensure navigation aids are operational and not suffering interference and to look for any new obstacles that could be a danger to aviation safety.

CASA requires these checks to be carried out every three years to maintain a high level of air safety. If poor weather or other factors do not allow the safety checks to go ahead on the planned day CASA advises they will be carried out as soon as possible.
