Two US Air Force Boeing B-52 Stratofortresses have been scheduled to appear at the Australian International Airshow in two weeks.

One aircraft will be at Avalon for the whole week on static display, and the second one will stage out of its overseas base on the Friday and perform an aerial display over the air show.

The B-52s are an eight-engined bomber designed in 1946 to carry nuclear weapons over long distances. The prototype was first flown at the height of the Cold War in 1952, and remarkably, the type is not slated for final retirement until 2045, 99 years after it was first conceived.

The US Air Force is also scheduled to bring an F-22 Raptor, F-16C Viper, Global Hawk, KC135R Stratotanker and a P-8 Posidon long-range maritime patrol aircraft.

Based on the Boeing 737, the Posidon was designed to replace the evergreen P3C Orions, and has been selected to enter service with the Royal Australian Air Force.

All appearances by US military aircraft at Avalon are subject to availability and other operational needs of the US Air Force.

Avalon 2015 is on from 24 February - 1 March 2015.
