Serving military personnel, veterans and emergency services members will be honoured at a special HARS Aviation Museum event ahead of Anzac Day commemorations.

The “Honouring Those Who Serve” Tarmac Day will be held at Shellharbour Airport on Friday 10 April, featuring historic military aircraft displays and ground runs.

Up to five former Royal Australian Air Force, Army and Navy aircraft are expected to take part in a ground parade between 11 am and midday, with additional aircraft on static display. Types scheduled to run include the C-47 Dakota, Grumman Tracker, De Havilland Caribou, Lockheed Neptune and Orion, with the possibility of a Vietnam-era Huey helicopter flying.

Other aircraft on display will include a Vampire, Avon Sabre and F-111C.

Event organisers Professor Michael Hough and John Stead said the day is designed to recognise both military and civil service.

“Anyone wearing service medals will be admitted free, and all service is to be recognised,” Hough said.

Guests wearing medals will be invited to morning tea and have the opportunity to take group photos with the aircraft.

The event will conclude at 12:30 pm, followed by a lunch hosted by local RSL sub-branches.

HARS will also conduct its traditional Anzac Day flyovers, with aircraft including the Dakota, Caribou, Huey, Neptune and Orion expected to take part, subject to operational conditions. Flyovers are planned for locations including Shellharbour, Kiama, Nowra, Wollongong and southern Sydney suburbs.

“Due to the rapidly rising fuel costs, HARS is requesting donations towards covering the steep and still unpredictable fuel costs for the Anzac Dey events. If you can help please go to: https://hars.org.au/donations/,” Hough said.

HARS Aviation Museum is open daily at Shellharbour Airport. Details of check-in at HARS Aviation Museum at www.hars.org.au
