Former Federal Liberal Party leader Peter Dutton has been appointed as a non-executive director of LifeFlight Commercial, strengthening the organisation’s board as it continues to expand its aeromedical and aviation operations.

Dutton brings more than two decades of experience in federal politics, having served for 23 years in Parliament in senior portfolios including Defence, Immigration and Border Protection, Health and Sport, and as Australia’s inaugural Minister for Home Affairs.

LifeFlight Commercial, launched in 2018, supports the organisation’s community rescue helicopter service by generating revenue through commercial operations, with funds reinvested into its core lifesaving mission.

Dutton said he had observed LifeFlight’s growth over many years and was looking forward to contributing to the organisation at a time of significant expansion.

“Being based in Queensland, I’ve had plenty of time to observe LifeFlight’s evolution over the past five decades into a major force in the aeromedical sector,” he said.

“I’ve also been privileged as a former Minister for Defence and Minister for Home Affairs to see what LifeFlight was able to bring on its deployments for the Australian Defence Force and Australian Border Force.

“LifeFlight is making great strides across Australia and internationally, which makes it an exciting time to become part of the Board.”

LifeFlight’s commercial arm has supported a range of operations including deployments for the Australian Defence Force, Australian Border Force, NSW State Emergency Service and the Australian Maritime Safety Authority.

The organisation has also expanded its footprint in recent years, announcing a $250 million partnership with Leonardo in 2025 to develop advanced training and engineering facilities in Queensland.

Its StarFlight joint venture with Linfox has also commenced 24/7 aeromedical operations in Tasmania following the award of the state’s emergency air services contract.

LifeFlight Commercial Chair John Lewis welcomed Dutton’s appointment, describing his experience across government and business as a valuable addition to the board.

“Peter Dutton has had a remarkable career in government and business, and his appointment strengthens the board immeasurably,” Lewis said.

Dutton replaces Stewart Morland as a non-executive director and joins a board that includes Lewis, Jim Elder, Katarina Carroll and managing director Ashley van de Velde.

His appointment took effect on 1 March.
