A new OzRunways application has brought airfield awareness to smaller Apple devices.

Called RWY Go, the app is designed to run on iPhones and the new Apple Watch, and delivers information on nearby airports to pilots in the air.

RWY Go contains a worldwide database of runways, navaids and frequencies, covering everything from dirt strips to regional and international airports.

OzRunways co-founder and RWY Go designer, Rowan Willson: "The Apple Watch's brilliant interface inspired us to create more than just a companion app. Instead we have launched a powerful tool that is both useful and fun to use for pilots, passengers and aviation enthusiasts."

The app has an intelligent radar that sweeps the area to pick the best airport, looking at runway length and width, relative bearings and distances, then picks the most suitable for the operation. During descent, it prioritises airports ahead rather than off to the side or behind.

Pilots can turn on Direct-To at any time, which locks on to the selected airport. The database can also be searched and any airport in the world selected.

METAR, TAF and NOTAMs are loaded for applicable airports and if there is a wind direction given in the METAR or TAF/TTF, will display a windsock on the runway diagram.

However, continually using the GPS in the background will deplete the device's battery at a much faster rate than normal.

More information on RWY Go is available from iTunes.
