Australian Flying and the Australian Division of the Royal Aeronautical Society have released details of the judging panel for the 2016 Wings Awards.

The Wings Awards recognise achievement and contribution to general aviation in Australia by individuals, clubs and flying schools.

The judging panel is comprised of four people with extensive experience in general aviation and the aerospace industry. The panel members for 2016 are:

  • Andrew Drysdale
  • Doug Nancarrow
  • Shelley Ross
  • Steve Hitchen

Andrew Drysdale is the Executive Director of Mentor Aviation Services and a Senior Visiting Fellow at the University of NSW, where he lectures on aviation management. He is a former president of the Royal Aeronautical Society in Australia, serves on the Council, and is a Fellow of the Society. He was CEO of Fiji’s Air Pacific, and of Australian Regional Hazelton Airlines, and Regional Vice President Asia/Pacific for the International Air Transport Association (IATA). He has served on the Boards of IATA and of the Regional Airlines Association of Australia.

Doug Nancarrow is the General Manager of the Australian Division of the Royal Aeronautical Society. He is also an award-winning aviation journalist who was editor of Aviation Business magazine and Executive Chairman of Safeskies Australia. He also holds a CPL and has been an owner/manager of a flight training organisation. He is most recently the author of Game Changer, a biography of Virgin Australia supremo John Borghetti.

Shelley Ross is one of Australia's most well-known advocates of outback aircraft touring, with her Destinations series in Australian Flying and her website www.flyingtheoutback.com.au. She was the editor of Australian Flying for nine years and holds a CPL and has an instrument rating. She has also contributed significantly to the success of the CASA Out-N-Back series of videos and the OnTrack pre-flight planning tool.

Steve Hitchen in the current editor of Australian Flying and has been a general aviation journalist for over 15 years. He is a private pilot with tailwheel, multi-engine and formation endorsements, and an RA-Aus Pilot Certificate. He is a member of Lilydale Flying Club in Victoria's Yarra Valley and a Director of Chordline Media and Communications.

Nominations for this year's Wings Awards open on 28 March and close on 1 July, with the winners announced in the third week of October.
