Matt Hall has conceded he needs more time in the aeroplane in the lead-up to this weekend's round of the Red Bull Air Race in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Hall hopes logging hours in the MXS-R will help him build for some good results in the remainder of the World Championship series, in which he currently sits fourth.

"I've been doing a lot more flying than I have over the past six months in the plane," he told Red Bull Media. "I'm aiming to log up to five hours' training in the plane this week, which is a lot more than previously. I felt my currency in this plane was too low to be racing efficiently so that's something we've been focusing on."

According to Hall, the issue is exacerbated by the number of different types he flies back home in Australia.

"While the principles of flight are the same for every aircraft, the feel of the stick and how much you move it, how quickly you can approach the 10G limit or the lift limit of the wing – they are all different.

"When I switch back between aircraft I retrain my hands and feel on that particular one. Because we get to spend limited time in these planes around the world, I got lulled into the false sense of security that I'd been flying lots at home and was comfortable pulling G."

This weekend's race will be held at the Texas Motor Speedway, a relatively short hop from the last event at Ascot in the UK. Already Hall is feeling better for not having to make a long, arduous flight only a few days before the race.

"I've come here straight from the UK so it's the first race where I'm not jetlagged, which is a big help to us," said Hall. "I feel awake and alert and that's probably the biggest change I've made for this race."

The race starts at 12.15pm Sunday local time (3.15 am Monday morning AEST).
