The in-flight break-up of a Tiger Moth near Stradbroke Island has prompted the ATSB to issue a warning about fatigued tie rods.
The warning comes in the Preliminary Investigation Report into the fatal crash of VH-TSG during an aerobatic joyflight last December, during which the left wing separated in flight.
ATSB investigation found the tie rods that connect the wings had failed due to metal fatigue, prompting the warning to Tiger Moth operators to inspect components fitted to their aircraft.
In the preliminary report, the ATSB stressed they had not concluded that the fatigue failure caused the wing separation. The final report is expected to be released before December 2014.
The preliminary report is on the ATSB website.
